Top 14 Tea Resolutions For 2014-A Kick-Start to National Hot Tea Month

January is National Hot Tea Month-January is also a time to make some changes for the better. What are your resolutions and how can tea play a part in making your life better this year?

Here are 14 tea resolutions for 2014:

1. Keep a journal. Journaling is said to be great for your personal psyche... keeping a tea journal can be very beneficial as well. Start by recording each new tea you try and everything you experience about that tea through each of your senses. Record all of it. Then add some notes about how it made you feel... others feel, etc.

2. Learn more about tea. Learn about proper brewing, health benefits, terroir (the regional conditions that make each tea from different places taste unique).

3. Use cold, fresh, quality water for brewing. And, try a variety of different strainers/infusers, cups and pots.

4. Learn how to brew different types of tea using different temperature water/brew time. No more bitter tea if you treat each type correctly. Remember whites and greens must be brewed using lower temperature water than black tea.

5. Explore teas from different regions of origin. Create personal or business events for each type. People enjoy sampling events. It has been said over and over again that tea is like a vacation in a cup. Let's get going!

6. Explore different methods of processing: white, green, oolong, black. Learn what makes each different.

7. Store your in a dark, airtight container. Do not refrigerate (unless it is something unusual and suggested by your supplier), the condensation will ruin the tea every time you open it.

8. Make tea a healthy part of your daily fluid intake. Skip the sweeteners and added calories!

9. Learn to enjoy the taste of tea with nothing added. A quality loose leaf variety should be so delightful that you would never think to add anything to it.

10. Spice it up or sweeten it, naturally! Try adding spices instead of sweeteners. Ginger, for example, is great in blacks or greens. Add some fruit to your hot or iced tea or skip that altogether and purchase a blended tea with a variety of fruits already in the mix. No need for added sweeteners! Try adding your own healthy flavorings to your tea in place of sweeteners. Try a slice of lemon, or simply lemon zest.

1. Clean out the cupboards! Get rid of that old stale packages in the back of the cabinet.

12. Try a new tea once per month... at least 12 times per year. Try something new to you. Visit a tearoom or shop to purchase a new loose leaf tea. In most cases, you should be able to purchase a small amount to try.

13. Get cooking. Try cooking with tea, adding tea to food and beverage recipes.

14. Befriend a coffee drinker. Yes we went there! Drinking coffee or tea brings people together. Be open to new experiences. Sharing goes both ways. Introduce one another to something new. The most important part of this is to share and experience something together with your friends. Teach your coffee drinking pals something special about tea and introduce them to the wonder and delight of tea... you may not transform them completely but you may help them to discover something more...

Use National Hot Tea Month to learn more about tea and enjoy tea more, each and every day!

The Joys of Tea: An Infusion Of Comfort

Among the gifts the Chinese have given to the world, surely tea must rank among the most wonderful. Few aromas can evoke such elegance, few beverages can inspire like herbal tea. Whether sweetened and served iced, or hot with cream and cookies, or lukewarm with a slice of lemon, tea is an infinitely flexible and ubiquitous beverage, available on every continent and in a myriad of forms.

The Assam variety of Camellia sinesis is a multi-stemmed evergreen, and the buds are hand plucked and dried. Three basic varieties of the beverage are produced from this bush: green, black and oolong. Oolong comes from a special breed of the China plant known a chesima, which gives it its unique flavor. Oolong is a slightly bitter beverage, with a brown or amber coloring. Faint traces of jasmine can be noticed in this brew.

Green tea is extremely popular in China, and produces a mild, slightly bitter, pale greenish-yellow brew. It is typically consumed without any sweetener added.

Black tea enjoys the lions share of worldwide popularity; both orange pekoe and pekoe are black teas. Early Grey Imperial is a blend of three type of leaves, with oil of bergamot (a type of citrus fruit) added for flavoring.

Herbal teas, such as soothing chamomile, can stand on their own, or be blended with standard leaves. The delicate China Rose herbal tea is blended with actual rose petals for a heady floral aroma. Mint leaves are refreshing, and in Morocco, is served in tiny cups with enough sugar to nearly qualify it as a syrup. Blended herbal teas can include the flavors of apple, cinnamon, cloves, and oranges, among others.

The harvesting of the leaves is labor intensive and painstaking. It takes roughly 2, 000 freshly plucked China leaves to make up one pound. They must be dried, shredded to a uniform size and blended. The popular Lipton blend is a mixture of twenty to sixty different varieties of the leaves.

A brewed cup of tea contains a moderate amount of caffeine, far less than the same amount of coffee, and by itself weighs in at four calories. Add sugar and milk, and the calorie count jumps to about forty. In Great Britain, consumption of tea adds approximately 240 calories to the average adult's daily intake.

In Japan, the traditional tea ceremony is not only an opportunity to enjoy a refreshing beverage, but a gracious meditation, and the deliberate movements involved can take ten years or more to fully master.

Visitors to Ottawa can enjoy a staggering variety of teas and herbal teas at the Ottawa Tea Festival, where you can learn about the blends, sample various herbal tea brews, and mingle with other tea lovers. For the true tea lover, a vacation to Ottawa is well worth the effort.

Flavors of traditional sipping teas range from heavy and hearty, too smoky and rich, to bitter and sharp, to pale and light. Whatever you prefer in your cup, the mighty leaf can rise to the occasion.

Cha Yi is a tea house located in Gatineau that offers a wide range of different kinds of tea to be enjoyed in warm and relaxing environment. Come down to sample our selection of black, green and herbal teas, and you won't be disappointed.

What Are Boba Tea or Tapioca Pearls?

Tapioca pearls are round, chewy balls made out of tapioca starch and make for a great dessert. They are also called "Booba" and range from 1/8 "to around 1/4" in diameter. Usually they are dark brown to black in color, but transparent ones are available also.

Tapioca pearls are usually the smaller variant of the snack and are used in tapioca pudding and other sorts of desserts eaten with a spoon. Although the word Boba can refer to both the large and small versions, most people associate it with the larger version.

Although you can find size variations between tapioca pearls and boba, the standard ingredients required to make them are the same. Tapioca starch refined from dried up cassava root plant, sugar, and water are the three simple ingredients required to produce the pearls. They are combined together and blended into a soft dough, then formed into small beads and packaged to sell. The last step is to boil them for approximately 40 minutes, and through the process of starch gelatinzation they become smooth and bouncy.

Boba's texture is really unique. Many come close to its texture but none could replicate it. Since the pearls are made from starch, it has a very gelatin like texture comparable to that of gummy bears. The one key distinction is that gummy bears are much tougher to chew. The pearls are smooth but also not too mushy simultaneously.

Although it looks like that boba drinks have been available for some time, using tapioca pearls in a drink is a new idea. A larger diameter straw is specifically created so the pearls can fit. A tea flavored drink, typically with added milk, is mixed with the tapioca pearls to create the popular Boba Milk Tea.

In the 1980 's at a store in Taichung, Taiwan, a new way of eating boba pearls came about when it was combined with flavored tea drinks. At this store, a smaller version of the pearls was used. As this new idea spread, larger variants was preferred as it offered more chewing pleasure.

While it is possible to swallow the miniature-sized pearls found in tapioca pudding, regular size tapioca pearls can actually be a choking risk. This may seem scary, but injuries concerning boba are rare. It's just important to bear in mind that boba must always be chewed completely to fully enjoy. The popularity of has soared in recent times; the selection of drinks have increased significantly and it's safe to say that boba has made its mark in societal lifestyle.

The Many Benefits of Tea

AppId is over the quota

Tea comes in many varieties. Officially only the Camellia Sinensis plant, it is common for other plants and herbs to be steeped in hot water.

Tea benefits nearly every organ system in the body. It is cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-obesity, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, liver protective, and beneficial to blood vessel health.

Behind water, it is the second most consumed beverage in the world. On any given day, over half of the American population drinks tea.

Growing conditions vary resulting in a number of distinctive leaves. Surprisingly, it is the type of processing that determines the major difference between the four most common types: black, green, white, and oolong. All of these factors combine to influence both the flavor and nutritional content.

Most Common Teas

Black tea: The most common type with the highest caffeine, made with fermented tea leaves.

Green tea: Made with unfermented leaves, it has a high concentration of the catechin, EGCG.

White tea: It is the least processed and made from the new growth buds and young leaves. Uncured and unfermented.

Oolong tea: Made with partially fermented leaves. Oolong teas are full bodied in flavor and aroma.

Tea exerts benefits through polyphenols, commonly called catechins. The most potent catechin, EGCG, may help against free radicals that contribute to cancer, heart disease, and clogged arteries.

The more processed the leaves, usually the less polyphenol content. The processes used in black and oolong tea are known to decrease levels catechins more than other teas. Green tea contains the highest concentration of the powerful antioxidant EGCG.

Matcha green tea stone grinds the entire tea leaf, rather than infusing tea leaves in water. Matcha has EGCG concentrations 100 times more than a common green tea and 3 times more than other green teas.

Most of the nutrition in regular tea remains unused, trapped in the tea leaves. Matcha provides teas full arsenal of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. You need ~ ten cups of regular tea to match the potency found in a single serving of matcha.

Herbal brews, like lavender, chamomile, and yerba mate are not technically considered tea. They are unique infusions of different plants with varying characteristics. Herbal teas have different concentrations of nutrients from green, white, black, and oolong tea.

Attention & Clarity

Tea consumption can improve mood and performance. A number of studies have shown particularly consistent evidence for improved attention, alertness, and arousal. Tea also shows beneficial effects on work performance and creativity.

Matcha green tea has been commonly used to aid clarity. Japanese monks would drink matcha to remain alert yet calm during long periods of meditation. Tea is rich in L-Theanine, an amino acid that promotes a state of relaxation and well-being.

Matcha contains more L-Theanine than common black and green teas. Additionally, L-Theanine can inhibit some of the side-effects from caffeine, a natural component of tea. The unique composition of green tea promotes concentration and clarity without the jitters or crash.

Cardiovascular & Other Disease

Tea consumption has been shown to protect against the development and progression of cardiovascular disease, one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and endothelial function effects are thought to play a key role in these protective effects.

Although tea has been consumed for centuries, there are limited placebo controlled human studies as a health-promoting beverage. Further study is needed to clarify whether catechins represent ancillary ingredients or key molecules involved in the biological properties of green tea.

However, green tea represents a promising tool for the prevention of cardiovascular disorders, and an increase in the consumption of tea should be encouraged.

Weight Loss

Overall, green tea has a small positive effect on weight loss and weight management.

It affects thermogenesis by acting synergistically with the caffeine component. It can also augment other fat burning compounds, usually through COMT inhibition.

However, these effects may not work for everyone. The inconsistencies in fat oxidation may be due to individual differences, such as caffeine tolerance; the lower ones tolerance to caffeine is, the more effective green tea catechins appear to be on fat loss.

A recent meta-analysis found that each cup of green tea may be causative of burning 1/8 lb of body fat.

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

In the modern world we are living in, tea joins the list of one of the most consumed beverages. Whether you prefer your tea cold, warm or hot, herbal tea has been credited as a major contributor when it comes to weight loss and boosting metabolism. This is because it contains a unique blend making it the perfect compliment to any diet. The following are some of the reasons why you should change your taste and become a hardcore fan of herbal tea.

Weight loss benefit

Herbal tea contains two main herbs namely dandelion and nettle. They contain diuretic properties, which actually helps them to reduce excess water from the body thus leading to the weight loss. In addition, organic tea that contains fennel also contributes to weight loss due to its nature of suppressing appetite.

When you lose your weight, you may be able to enjoy the highest life expectancy, experience few obesity problems, low levels of stress and regular activity in the old age.

Stimulates metabolism

Basically, green tea provides various potent antioxidants such as epigallocatechin gallate which has the capability of stimulating your body's metabolism leading to faster weight loss. The antioxidants and the caffeine works together to stimulate your central nervous system and also to provide fats into the blood stream which are later used by the body as fuel.

Green tea to reduce fats

If you are a constant drinker of green tea, the fat content in your body may be reduced up to a certain level. This is because it contains high amounts of polyphenols, which activate a certain enzyme in the body that plays the role of dissolving excess triglyceride leading to fats decrease.

Promotes restful sleep

Living a healthy life does not only involve eating a balanced diet food, but also it contains having enough sleep. This is the main reason why you are being encouraged to use herbal tea. The tea is very important when it comes to reducing sleeping disorders such as muscle spasms and insomnia. It is also common for promoting healthy sleep especially using unique properties that are contained in it.

Guide To Healthy Weight Loss

Overview:

Low-cal diets and aerobics have been the typical "prescribed solution" to healthy weight loss. However, with numerous fad diets and a multi-billion dollar industry dedicated to weight management, shedding a few kilos should be easy. Sadly, the weight lost by dieters is almost always recouped. Consequently, many users fall into the "yo-yo trap," a recurring cycle of weight loss and gain. There are several reasons why this occurs and why food restriction for the purpose of healthy weight loss should be circumvented. Each time the body is deprived of essential nutrients, whether from fasting or dieting, it guarantees survival by diminishing the metabolic rate in order to reimburse for fewer calories. Energy is stored so efficiently in fatty tissues that someone of normal weight can survive for weeks without eating.

Furthermore, the desire to binge after food restriction, although disheartening to dieters is another built-in survival mechanism intended to click on after a famine. Our cellular metabolism is too innocent to tell the difference between self-imposed starvation and life-threatening famine. One of the most healthy weight loss ways to treat obesity is to combine exercise with proper diet. It is not a matter of how much an individual eats, but what they eat is important. Rather than restrictive dieting, simply learning how to eat in a healthy and balanced way can have a major impact on weight control. Incorporating healthier eating habits into your lifestyle can improve your overall health and help you achieve a permanent and healthy weight loss.

Both natural alternative and conventional medicine agree that we should consume whole foods with less fat and animal protein, with the minimal amount of processed, adulterated, fried, or sweetened preservatives, and eat more complex carbohydrates, especially whole grains rich in fiber, and at least five servings daily of fruits and vegetables. Lowering dietary fat and increasing physical activity are the two key factors to realize healthy weight loss. Eating well-balanced meals at regular intervals during the day (usually four to five hours apart) stabilizes blood sugar and helps you manage your appetite.

Whole dietary fiber foods can have a major impact on weight gain as evident by the almost complete lack of obesity in cultures that consume a diet in fiber. Fiber has been shown to not only reduce serum cholesterol, but to also pull dietary fat from the body into the feces. Other benefits of roughage include increasing chewing time, thus slowing down the eating process and inducing satiety, preventing constipation and stabilizing blood glucose levels. Whole grains (wheat, oats, rice, rye, barley, millet) have the highest level of fiber, followed by legumes, nuts and seeds, root vegetables (potatoes, turnips, beets, carrots), fruits, and leafy, green vegetables.

To attain healthy weight loss alcohol should be shunned or minimized, since it has been found to act like a fat in the body and promote weight gain. Cigarettes, which are smoked by many people to control their weight, also appear to shove extra flab to the abdomen. Medical and scientific data also point to the advantages of moving towards a vegetable-based diet. A diet low in animal protein, along with exercise and stress-reduction measures, can actually reverse cardiovascular disease.

Summary:

Healthy weight loss yields a positive psychological gain, increases overall body fitness, tones the muscles and rouses self-confidence. Positive mental health is an essential part of the concept of total health. Healthy weight loss improves psychological health, which eventually, helps in sustaining the correct weight. It offers a general dietary and lifestyle pattern that favors weight maintenance even without strict calorie counting.

Green Tea Weight Loss - Myth or Fact?

Have you seen recent Oprah show? Green tea was recently discussed in this show also. I think you might already aware that green tea helps a lot to battle against life-threatening diseases like heart disease, arteriosclerosis and cancer. Yet, there is one more reason why you must prefer green tea. It is nothing but- IT helps in weight loss and burns your excess fat.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January 2005 issue dealt in detail about the benefits of green tea. It clearly indicates that green tea is a real fat fighter. It opined that substances present in green tea, popularly known as catechins, could prompt weight loss by burning calories and body fat.

In general, green tea leaves are not fermented unlike oolong tea and black tea. Also, green tea is rich in polyphenols, shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anticancer, and anti-oxidant properties.

The action of weight loss has been performed by the green tea by the way it maintains and lowers the blood sugar during the meals time. In other words, we can infer that your body is not creating the substances, which produce fat as readily as it normally would when the green tea is being included.

Green tea is being adored world wide as it offers a much better and less bitter taste than its siblings. The green tea is known for its ability to ease your stomach pain that a lot of people have and that means that it gets disappearing off the shelves every where you turn.

If you’re looking for some easy ways to lose some pounds, green tea might be a perfect answer for your prayer. Recently a website is offering a free 30 day supply of green tea, but I’m sure how long this offer might be… so I’d suggest to sign up for your free green tea bags as early as possible.

Green Tea Weight Loss: Hollywood’s Favorite

Weight loss is a big deal to a good many people in the world and that is not more evident than to the people in Hollywood.  There is no secret that people in Hollywood worry about being thin and some of them will go to extreme measures to make sure that they stay that way.  Of course there is always something new coming down the pike for this type of thing and that is evident with the green tea weight loss theory.  This has become one of the most popular weight loss solutions in Hollywood and the other parts of the world.  This is due in part to the supposed medicinal properties that green tea holds and the many benefits of drinking it.  There is a lot of research that supports this theory but just like everything else there is a lot that looks to shoot it down.

Green tea weight loss depends on the persons desire to drink green tea.  The research shows that green tea weight loss works by the lowering or maintaining of blood sugar during the meal times.  This means that the body is not creating the products that create fat as readily as it normally would when the green tea is being ingested.  Of course this all means very little if you do not have a healthy diet to start with.  You should take this to heart when trying this green tea weight loss plan as it works only with the proper food intake and that means a big life style change for many of the people involved.

Green tea weight loss is catching on all over the world and mostly because of the popularity of the product itself.  Many people are turning to green tea because it offers a much better and less bitter taste than its siblings.  It is also said to be great for a whole host of ailments that come down and that is all not quite proven as of yet.  The green tea is said to help ease the stomach problems that a lot of people have and that means that it is flying off the shelves every where you turn.

Green tea weight loss depends on a good many things and you should ask your doctor before undertaking such a plan. There are a good many reasons to drink this substance but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Green Tea Patches For Weight Loss?

One of the newest products to hit the dieting market are weight loss patches.

Inspired by the success of nicotine patches marketers struck on the idea that weight loss patches may work the same way. Weight loss patches are basically designed for people who forget to take their regular dosage of weight loss supplements or capsules. With weight loss patches, a person will no longer need to take pills as he will have a 24hour supply of substances stuck to his skin.

Weight loss patches are commonly made from such ingredients as algae and seaweed which are known appetite-suppressants. Later studies on weight loss and diets led to the use of green tea as a weight loss patch.

What? Green Tea as Weight Loss Patches?

As far back as the Ming dynasty and perhaps even earlier than that, green tea has been used as herbal remedy and overall health drink in China. In recent times, speculations on the use of green tea as a possible remedy for cancer have arisen due to the discovery that the polyphenol substance found in green tea can stop cancer cells from growing.

The polyphenols in green tea weight loss patches also have other uses. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that green tea polyphenols can speed up the metabolic rate of the body. With this recent discovery, several companies specializing in pharmaceutical products have started introducing green tea into the market as a supplement either in the form of diet pills or weight loss patches.

Green tea weight loss patches are a better alternative to other products since they have no adverse side-effects. Other substances that induce weight loss like ephedra may increase heart rates which could lead to cardiovascular complications.

Green tea weight loss patches are good for people with high LDL, the bad cholesterol found in the body. Because the antioxidants in green tea weight loss patches destroy LDL cholesterols while at the same time enhancing the good cholesterol levels in the body, a balance in the body is achieved which could only lead to overall good health and well-being.

Green tea weight loss patches works in two ways. First, they suppress appetite naturally and safely. A study at the University of Chicago showed that rats when injected with green tea can lose up to 21% of their bodyweight. This is due to the fact that a substance present in green tea acts as a natural appetite-suppressant that staves off hunger.

Green tea weight loss patches also increase metabolism. With their high epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) content, green tea weight loss patches have a distinct advantage over stimulant diet drugs which can be harmful to individuals with hypertension and heart complications.

Green Tea Increases Metabolism

Green Tea Extract Increases Metabolism, May Aid in Weight Loss

In a study reported on in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it was found that green tea extract resulted in a significant increase in energy expenditure (a measure of metabolism), plus also had a significant effect on fat oxidation. Whilesome of the effects were originally theorized to be due to the caffeine content of green tea, the researchers discovered that the tea actually has properties that go beyond those that would be explained by the caffeine.

The same amount of caffeine as was in the green tea, administered alone, failed to change energy expenditure in other studies. This led reseachers to believe that there is some interaction going on with the active ingredients of green tea that promotes increased metabolism and fat oxidation.

The researchers indicated that their findings have substantial implications for weight control. A 4% overall increase in 24-hour energy expenditure was attributed to the green tea extract, however, the research found that the extra expenditure took place during the daytime. This led them to conclude that, since thermogenesis (the body's own rate of burning calories) contributes 8-10% of daily energy expenditure in a typical cubject, that this 4% overall increase in energy expenditure due to the green tea actually translated to a 35-43% increase in daytime thermogenesis.

Green tea extract might help blood cancer patients

The participants of the research were 4 victims of CLL, the most common type of blood cancer, who were being given drugs containing green tea extract epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). After a certain period of time, a decrease in cancerous cells in their bodies was observed. 3 of the 4 patients expressed improved response to treatment and one had improved white blood cell count. One patient whose lymph nodes had swollen up decreased in size after she started taking green tea pills.

Earlier in 2004, the same team of scientists, led by Dr Tait Shanafelt, had conducted a laboratory research of the influence of EGCG on leukemia cells. The findings were published in a 2004 edition of the journal Blood. It had been discovered that the green tea extract killed the leukemia cells. “The experience of these individuals provides some suggestion that our previously published laboratory findings may actually translate into clinical effects for patients with the disease,” Dr Shanafelt said.

“Green tea has long been thought to have cancer-prevention capabilities. It is exciting that research is now demonstrating this agent may provide new hope for CLL patients,” Dr Shanafelt added. So far, no cure has been found for CLL, a progressing malignancy that usually targets people over 55 years of age. According to Dr Shanafelt, further studies are necessary for establishing the exact process and effect and the quantity of the extract that is optimum.

“We do not know how many patients were taking similar products and failed to have any benefit. We also do not yet know the optimal dose that should be used, the frequency with which patients should take the medication, and what side effects will be observed with long-term administration,” he said. The hematologist is now developing an EGCG pill for the US National Cancer Institute to find out whether the extract could be used to treat patients with CLL.

The medical fraternity expressed optimism at the results of the study, but felt that it might be too early to celebrate. “The findings are interesting, but we cannot say yet this is a new treatment for cancer. We need to carry out a large scale, controlled trial to see if the findings hold true,” said Ken Campbell of United Kingdom’s Leukemia Research Fund. Around 7300 Americans are diagnosed with CLL every year, with men being more subject to the disease than women.

Green tea, Weight Loss and More!

Green tea is has become a daily favourite of mine in view of its awesome health virtues. Funny how something tastes better the healthier you think it is for you! So, what are the remarkable benefits of this auspicious drink?

Green tea has been found to promote weight loss, reduce the risk of heart attack, pevent against cancer, protect your teeth and gums and offer relief for arthritis. Not bad for a leaf! These traits are due to a super concentration of antioxidants called catechins known for their outstanding health traits.

Weight Loss Enhancement

Green tea can actually promote weight loss which makes it a very friendly cuppa if shedding pounds is the objective, and a great ally in any healthy weight loss regime.

A study led by Dr. Dulloo at the University of Geneva, published in the December 1999 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that men given a combination of both caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given caffeine or placebo alone.

Results found that the men taking green tea extract had a significant increase in their measured energy expenditure (the number of calories used in a 24 hour period) and significant decrease in their respiration quotient (how well the body utilized carbohydrates, proteins and fats over a 24 hour period) over those taking just caffeine or placebo. The men taking green tea extract also used more fat calories than the placebo group.

The scientists believed that the catechin flavonoids in the green tea extract (potent antioxidants) may alter the body's use of norepinephrine, a chemical transmitter in the nervous system, to increase the rate of calorie burning.

They concluded, “Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both.”

Pro Heart

The cholesterol-lowering effects of green tea and black tea have been confirmed in countless studies. The ‘French Paradox’, namely the French high fat diet with comparably low rates of heart disease, is believed to be due to the flavonoid resveratrol found in wine.

In 1997, researchers from the University of Kansas found catachin EGCG in green tea to be twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why heart disease rates among Japanese men is quite low despite around 75 per cent of them being smokers.

In one 25 year study (the Zutphen Elderly Study; Hertog, M., et al., 1993), those that drank more than 8.5 ounces of tea per day had a much lower risk of experiencing or dying from heart attacks than those drinking less tea. Test tube studies have also found that green tea decreases the clumping of blood cells, reducing the risk of clotting associated with heart attacks and strokes.

Cancer Protective

Human and animal studies suggest green tea may be preventive against a variety of cancers including bladder, colon, esophageal, breast, pancreas, rectum, and stomach.  In 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published a study that indicated drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent!

Aid For Arthritis

The anti-inflammatory action of green tea, due to its flavonoid content, has shown promise for arthritis relief. Research by scientists at Case Western University (Haqqi et al., 1999), suggests that green tea antioxidants serve to postpone the onset and decrease the severity of one type of arthritis in mice.

Tea for your Teeth

Green tea is touted for oral health by asian practitioners and recent scientific research supports this use. Studies in animals and humans have shown how green tea can effectively combat the bacteria that causes cavities in teeth. Green tea also contains fluoride that is protective for teeth.

Green tea is a fantastic health ally and a refreshing and cleansing drink. If purchased loose a few leaves can be added to other herbal teas for variety.

Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis) And Weight Loss

It seems lately that I have come across an abundance of information on the benefits of consuming green tea. Because of this, I have been inspired to compile some of the information - specifically regarding green tea and weight loss. Green tea contains a number of things that are reported to be very healthful for you. Among these are: Tannins, phenols, polyphenols, and flavanoid compounds, the amino acid theanine, and catechins of which egcg seems to be the most beneficial. Some of the reported benefits you will see when researching green tea are: • Protecting skin from ultraviolet radiation • Protection against a number of different cancers • Increased life span • Protection of the brain • Increased antioxidant levels • Theanine has been reported to negate the jittery effect of caffeine, and heighten mental acuity and some have even said give a relaxed but aware state. • Last but not least are increased fat metabolism This increased fat metabolism is what is of most interest to people wanting to lose weight. It simply means the rate at which you burn calories and the body's ability to burn fat. The studies seem to point to a connection between the caffeine in green tea and the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which causes a boost in noradrenaline. Noradrenaline helps your body boost your metabolism and suppress your appetite. Some experts recommend that you take a standardized green tea supplement which contains 90mg of EGCG and 50mg caffeine. Of course you should always consult your physician before taking any supplement, especially one with caffeine. Drinking green tea can be a pleasurable experience. I have tasted some very good green teas and I have tasted some that taste like what I imagine blended grass would taste like. My favorites seem to be the mixture of green tea and lemongrass. The best tasting ones I have found have been in health food stores or online. Don't give up on your first taste. Experiment around and try different flavors of green tea. You may find one or more that you just absolutely love. I generally microwave my green tea and drink it warm. I have brewed several bags at a time using boiling water and then place in the refrigerator for a nice cool beverage as well. Drinking green tea can also be an aid to weight loss if it takes place of another habit such as coffee with sugar or cola. I know many people who start the day with a sugar filled caffeine cola or sweetened iced tea. This is how they get their morning caffeine. Why not substitute green tea for this and enjoy the feeling and health benefits? Replace that after lunch cup of coffee with a cup of green tea. You will be doing something healthy for your body and you won't experience the "drop" that coffee can leave you with an hour or so later. Also enjoy a cup of green tea before your exercise routine, just be careful and do not consume it late in the afternoon. A cup of green tea contains about half as much caffeine as a cup of coffee. If you are sensitive to caffeine – use caution or avoid all together. I am a believer in a healthy lifestyle to achieve your desired weight. If you know me or read any of my articles you also know that I am a believer in supplements – Only as an aid to a healthy lifestyle. Not a magic solution. I see green tea as an effective tool in your weight loss arsenal. Green tea seems like a wonderful addition to your daily life which may help you boost your metabolism, ward of sickness, and give you a gentle caffeine lift. Wishing you the best of health, Bill
